Great White Sport & Surf has been modeled on the “old school” Sport Stores from the sixties and seventies. Our founder Jeremy Hare loved going into these shops as a kid and browsing through the aisles, always finding something new and exciting. He has tried to recreate that experience and expand it so that the adults get to feel like kids again. As Jeremy likes to say “You can get everything from bait to bikinis!”

Jeremy has lead an interesting and adventurous life, from hunting Pirates up the East Coast of Africa to catching a 1000lb Black Marlin in Australia and surfing Sunset and Dungeons in our own back yard. He also spent a year sailing around the Comoros and the Seychelles back in the eighties and a summer skippering a 57ft yacht around the Mediterranean before spending a season working on the Prawn trawlers in Northern Australia.

The Great White Team

Jeremy was raised in Fish Hoek and Noordhoek, educated at Paul Greyling and Fish Hoek High School and even attempted a few years at UCT before, as he so eloquently words it, “I buggered off overseas for an adventure”. He had his 21st birthday on St Helena Island in the mid-Atlantic on his way to South America and the Caribbean where he managed to lose a mast in a hurricane with his first attempt as a skipper.

When Jeremy returned to South Africa in 1995 during the Rugby World Cup, he opened the Harbourside Backpackers in Kalk Bay and created the most exciting Restaurant and Pub since the Brass Bell. He then converted a 45ft sailing yacht to a commercial tuna vessel and when the weather was good he and a bunch of surfers from Kommetjie would sail out to the tuna grounds off Cape Point and spend a day or two loading up with Sushi. When the weather was rough they would spend their days surfing. Jeremy also designed and built the “TarrynAmy”. She was the forerunner to our modern tuna fleet and pioneered the Yellow Fin tuna fishery.

Why are we telling you all this? Well it is this eclectic collection of travel and adventure that helped inspire Great White Sport & Surf! So when you wander around you will see the influence of a lifetime of travel and adventure encapsulated in one amazing store.
